Virginia Main Street, Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development
The Virginia Main Street Program is a preservation-based economic and community development program that follows the National Main Street Center’s Main Street Approach. Virginia Main Street offers a range of services and assistance to meet the variety of needs of communities interested in revitalization. While the program was designed to address the need for revitalization and on-going management of smaller to mid-sized downtowns, aspects of the Main Street Approach may be applied successfully in other commercial settings.
The focal point of the program is assistance to competitively selected communities that are working in traditional downtown settings and meet certain threshold criteria. Communities with a population of 75,000 or less with a high degree of commitment and readiness that wish to use the Main Street Approach™ in a traditional downtown setting may apply for formal Virginia Main Street designation. If you are just getting started, do not want full Main Street designation, or for communities that wish to use the Main Street Approach™ in compact, pedestrian-oriented commercial settings, there is an Affiliate Program. Communities of any size, counties, and cities with neighborhood commercial districts may participate in the Affiliate Program

Historic and Cultural Preservation:
Local history and culture provide a context in which people understand their community. Citizens can be instilled with a sense of pride associated with their heritage, and civic pride often manifests itself in local projects. A shared understanding of the past helps communities plan for the future in a more realistic fashion, making history and culture important considerations in the Comprehensive Planning process.

Friends of Rivermont Historical Society, Rivermont Avenue Heritage Trust
Welcome to the Rivermont Avenue Heritage Trust, the official website of the Friends of Rivermont Historical Society.
The Rivermont Avenue subdivision was planned as a residential suburb of Lynchburg in the early 1890s. The name “Rivermont” can be traced to the 1850s’ property of William Daniel, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth Hannah Cabell. This original property stretched from near Point of Honor to the current Rivermont Avenue.
Our neighborhood traces its beginning to the opening of the Rivermont Bridge over Blackwater Creek in 1891. The Rivermont Bridge, considered in its day to be an engineering marvel, connected downtown Lynchburg with the Rivermont Avenue neighborhood. Unlike the rest of Lynchburg, which was laid out on a grid, the developers let the topographical curves dictate the route of Rivermont Avenue. Although our gently rolling hills and curves parallel the James River, Rivermont Avenue was carefully planned and was, in fact, one of the nation’s earliest planned communities....

Fairfax County Historic Preservation and Heritage Resources
Older buildings and neighborhoods in Fairfax County are part of Fairfax County's "heritage resources" and are economic and social investments that pay dividends. These sites and buildings also tell the history of the built environment in the county, which includes Native American hunting camps and long-term settlements, the tidewater plantations of George Washington and George Mason, Civil and Spanish-American War campsites and training grounds, as well as the 20th century planned town of Reston and its 19th century counterpart Dunn Loring. Recording, preserving, and studying this evidence enriches the quality of life in Fairfax County by putting residents in touch with their heritage, providing residents and property owners with a sense of temporal stability and continuity, and instilling in both young and old a loyalty and commitment to place and community. This public stewardship responsibility has been recognized for over thirty years and continues today.

“Is this siding original?”
“I’ve got to replace these old windows...”
“I wonder if they’ll let me add a family room to this house.”
“Where do I find someone good to repair this old brick wall?”
Depending on what your needs are in tackling historic preservation issues with a certain property or building, there are a number of resources in this area that may be of use to you. Keep in mind that historic preservation has many benefits... aesthetic, educational, and financial just to name a few... but that it is also a process which is regulated by legal codes and guidelines in most areas. Gathering information on your options and the process is always the best place to start.

The CAR is the city's official historic preservation body and is charged with reviewing all exterior changes to structures within the city's Old and Historic Districts and issuing Certificates of Appropriateness for those projects that it deems to be appropriate.
The CAR bases all its decisions generally on the Secretary of the interior's Standards for Rehabilitation and New Construction; and specifically on the Richmond Old & Historic Districts Handbook and Design Review Guidelines (14 MB), adopted in 1999.
When a neighborhood organization or other applicable entity submits a nomination request, the CAR oversees the process for designation of Old and Historic Districts and makes a final recommendation for designation to City Council.
The CAR also assists and advises City Council, all city boards and departments, and property owners in matters involving historic resources relating to appropriate land use, zoning, and other issues.

Fredericksburg Planning and Community Development
Preservation
Historic preservation is important to maintaining a community’s character, but should not be viewed as a recreation of the past. Instead, the Historic District is a reference point for change. Fredericksburg’s collection of historic buildings is a tangible link to the past, but accommodates a changing world. The city’s history is evident in its architecture, but the community still functions and grows.
Historic buildings are routinely adapted and upgraded to remain economically viable, while keeping their character defining features intact. New buildings are integrated into their historic setting and will eventually become historic in their own right. Insignificant or unusable buildings are removed to allow continued urban growth.

Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc
The Historic Fredericksburg Foundation, Inc. (HFFI) is a member- and volunteer-supported 501c(3) nonprofit organization. Founded in 1955 by a group of local citizens alarmed by the destruction of several architectural and historical landmarks in the city, today, HFFI remains steadfastly committed to the same guiding principles embraced by its founders over half a century ago: to protect the Fredericksburg area’s rich cultural heritage; to promote awareness of, and interest in, local preservation issues; and to inform future generations of the benefits of preservation to our quality of life.
