The Second Empire style Kimball House Hotel, Atlanta, Georgia.
Griffith Thomas, architect. Architectural rendering of 1870. Private Collection.
As completed, the Kimball House Hotel was a six-story brick hotel with cast iron framing and cast iron ornamental trim. The hotel's design included a full height light court with a glass ceiling and a fountain in the center, much like the similar but far more ornate Palace Hotel in San Francisco. The Kimball House Hotel contained several hundred rooms. The hotel also boasted all the latest technology, including plumbing, gas-light chandeliers, a central steam heating plant, steam laundry, elevators and a billiard hall,
In August of 1883, a careless smoker began a fire that swept up the elevator shafts and spread quickly. It leveled the building in five hours. Some of these details courtesy of Wikipedia.
Massive hotels styled in an American variation of French Renaissance design with tall Mansard roofs became common in large cities across America in the 1860's and 1870's, Virtually every one has been demolished or destroyed.

Georgia State Historic Preservation Office, Historic Preservation Division, Georgia Department of Natural Resources
The Historic Preservation Division (HPD) is Georgia’s state historic preservation office, or SHPO. Every state has a SHPO, established by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, As Amended, often referred to simply as the NHPA. HPD has several key functions as part of the national historic preservation program. First, through the Section 106 compliance program (named for the section of the federal implementing regulations of the NHPA), HPD functions as a watchdog over federal agencies doing business in the state, helping to insure that they respect our most important historic resources. Second, we administer various economic development programs that leverage private capital to encourage business growth, especially in our many smaller towns and communities. Finally, through programs like the National Register of Historic Places, Certified Local Governments, and others, we work with partners both inside and outside state government to encourage regional and local planning, neighborhood conservation, downtown revitalization, heritage tourism and archaeological site protection.

Historic Macon Foundation
Historic Macon’s mission is to revitalize our community by preserving architecture and sharing history.
Historic Macon Foundation (HMF) is a national leader in preservation and a role model for revitalization efforts throughout the country. Our innovative real estate tactics, state and federal tax credit consulting services, advocacy efforts with our Fading Five list of endangered places, educational programing, and low interest loan programs allow Historic Macon to transform our community and demonstrate the powerful impact of saving historic places. We've completed nearly 150 houses and kept 25,000 tons of debris out of the landfill. Just since 2014 we've attracted $5.8M in investments in our target neighborhood, Beall's Hill. Our work allows citizens to take preservation into their own hands. With the help of our community, we are proving that Macon is Preservation.

Cobb county
Cobb County Historic Preservation Commission
The first major step taken by Cobb County toward protecting its past was the passage of a countywide historic preservation ordinance in 1984. This ordinance was the first of its kind in Georgia. The ordinance established the Cobb County Historic Preservation Commission, known as CCHPC. Read the Cobb County Historic Preservation Ordinance.
The preservation commission is made up of five county residents who are appointed by the Board of Commissioners. Members of the preservation commission have keen interest and knowledge that qualify them to recommend specific buildings, districts, sites, structures or works of art to receive historical designation. Atlanta History Center
The Atlanta History Center was founded on the big ideas and relentless fascination of 14 Atlantans who were emphatic about our city’s historical relevance in society. In a sense, our organization was created by Atlanta’s biggest fans, and we love that detail. In 1926, these founding members introduced the Atlanta Historical Society into the world with one mission: to help preserve Atlanta’s history. In 1990, after decades of collecting, researching, publishing and celebrating the early stories of our great Southern community, the Atlanta Historical Society and all of its holdings officially became the Atlanta History Center.
