Jacksonville, Florida. the Freedman's Saving and Trust Company.
"The Freedman's Saving and Trust Company, popularly known as the Freedman's Savings Bank, was a private corporation chartered by the U.S. government to encourage and guide the economic development of the newly emancipated African-American communities in the post-Civil War period. Although functioning only between 1865 and 1874, the company achieved notable successes as a leading financial institution of African-Americans. Its failure was devastating to the newly emancipated black community...." Wikipadia
This remarkable building was rich with ornament. The most prominent portion was the tall concave mansard (Second Empire) roof. The curved roof was expensive to build. Notice that all the decorative structural elements aligned: the dormer windows in the Mansard roof aligned with the cornice brackets and flat pilaster columns below, which sat on the tall structural iron columns of the storefronts. Even the balcony front was arranged to match the pilasters behind them.

Dining room, Ponce de Leon Hotel, St. Augustine, Florida. The hotel was completed in 1888 for co- founder of Standard Oil and pioneering Florida developer, Henry Flagler. The New York architects John Carrère and Thomas Hastings collaborated on the hotel's design before forming their own very successful firm of Carrère and Hastings. The design pioneered the use of poured concrete construction for hotel buildings, and it was wired for electricity from the start because Thomas Edison was a friend of Flagler. from Wikipedia

FT. LAUDERDALE
Ft. Lauderdale Historic Preservation Board
Try to imagine . . . Fort Lauderdale without the Bonnet House and Gardens. Without the Stranahan House. Without the Downtown Historic District or the Sailboat Bend neighborhood.
All of these irreplaceable sites and more have survived because the City has passed laws to protect them. The City of Fort Lauderdale has a rich architectural heritage preserved in three historic districts, 54 individually designated historic sites, and ten sites on the National Register of Historic Places (two more are pending)
The HPB has several purposes. Their chief task is to implement the City’s historic preservation regulations. The HPB also reviews applications to designate architecturally worthy buildings and districts. Equally important, they review exterior alterations to locally designated landmark buildings and groups of buildings within historic districts to keep their appearance sympathetic to the original designs. This includes yard features and review of adjacent new construction in historic districts.

The Community Planning Division, Historic Preservation Section
The Community Planning Division, Historic Preservation Section (HPS) coordinates the City's historic preservation program. This program includes review of work in local historic districts and impacts to local landmarks through the Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) process as part of the Historic Preservation Element as part of the 2030 Comprehensive Plan.
The element defines the City’s role in addressing historic preservation issues and concerns. This Element identified one goal: 'It shall be the goal of the City of Jacksonville to identify, document, protect, and preserve its archaeological, historic, architectural, and cultural resources. Instilling public awareness of those resources shall be a part of that effort.' One step chosen by Jacksonville and utilized by many other municipalities in the local planning process to meet such a goal is being accepted in the Certified Local Government (CLG) Program administered by the Florida Department of State. Through local designation and historic preservation efforts, the City works to protect our history for future generations.
HPS also provides administrative support to the Jacksonville Historic Preservation Commission, responsible for review of certain COA applications and for recommending the designation of local landmarks and districts to the City Council. As part of the CLG specifications, the Historic Preservation Staff and Commission are required to report annual activities.

Lee County, Southwest Florida, Historic Preservation
In Lee County's historic districts, there are two types of designated properties: contributing and non-contributing. Contributing buildings are those that are historic, are exceptionally designed, or are directly associated with the historical period of that district. Non-contributing buildings are generally those structures built after the historical period of the district.
Certain regulations apply to the issuance of building, moving or demolition permits for designated properties within historic districts. For historic resources (specific buildings and historic districts) designated under the Historic Preservation Ordinance (Chapter 22, Land Development Code), applicants must obtain a Certificate of Appropriateness prior to obtaining a building, moving or demolition permit. An approved Certificate must accompany all building permit applications for designated historic resources.

The Legislature abolished the State office six years later, and the Foundation took over its duties.
The Historic Florida Keys Foundation receives ongoing financial support from Monroe County, in exchange for assisting their Historic Preservation program.

Preservation Winter Park
Preservation Winter Park is a blog published by the Friends of Casa Feliz.
This blog is born out of an April, 2013 strategic planning session of the Friends Board of Directors. An important part of our organizational mission is “to engage the public through education and advocacy for the purpose of preserving and promoting the community’s rich architectural, historic and cultural heritage.” And while we hope to serve as a beacon to historic preservation efforts all around Central Florida, it is in Winter Park where the Casa is located, and frankly, Winter Park where the alarm bell needs to be sounded.
The Friends believe strongly that what differentiates Winter Park from other communities–what makes the city one of the nicest places to live and visit in Central Florida–is not the chain of lakes, the upscale shops and restaurants, or the lovely tree canopy. Not that those things aren’t vitally important. But what makes Winter Park truly unique among towns in Central Florida is its rich architectural heritage: the old homes and buildings that tell the story of the community’s past, that continue to bring pleasure in the present, and will, if properly cared for, inform and inspire the future...

PALM BEACH
Town of palm beach, Planning, Zoning & Building, Historic Preservation
In 1979, in an effort to combat the loss of the Town of Palm Beach’s historic resources, the Town Council adopted a Historic Preservation Ordinance (Palm Beach Code, Chapter 54, Historic Preservation, Section 54-36). The purpose of this ordinance was to study and protect Palm Beach’s most significant architectural achievements, ensuring that the heritage of Palm Beach would not be lost for future generations. Since that time, the ordinance has been amended a number of times in an effort to clarify the purpose of the ordinance and its requirements.

WEST PALM BEACH
West Palm Beach, Development Services, Historic Preservation
West Palm Beach is fortunate to enjoy an abundance of beautiful historical areas. The region includes 16 locally-designated historic districts, nine of which have earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
Each of the City’s historic districts have their own distinct character. It’s the mission of the Historic Preservation program to maintain this heritage for future generations. To ensure this, any exterior modification to a historic structure must comply with our Historic Preservation Ordinance.
The City also features 37 individually-designated sites. The City of West Palm Beach initiated a survey of the historical and architectural resources of the community in 1988. Since then we have adopted an Historic Preservation Ordinance; participate in the Florida Certified Local Government Program; and offer an Ad Valorem Tax Exemption Program.

Pinellas County
Pinellas County Historic Preservation Board
Pinellas County enjoys a rich and diverse culture and historic past. The historical, cultural and aesthetic heritage is among its most valued assets. Few urban areas today boast such unique perspectives of the past. Because of widespread growth and redevelopment in recent years, it is critical to the future of our County that we preserve and maintain significant elements of its history where possible. The Pinellas County Comprehensive Plan provides a foundation for the County’s historic preservation policy.
In September of 2015, as a result of the County’s ongoing historic preservation commitment, and based on meeting specific requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act, Pinellas County was designated by the State of Florida as a Florida Certified Local Government.

Clearwater, Planning and Development, Historic Preservation
The preservation of historic properties ensures that the City of Clearwater’s unique character and identity are maintained. Historic preservation provides a connection to the past and reminds us that buildings have stories to tell. They provide a link to the experiences, values, and events of those who came before us, which in turn gives us a better understanding of who we are. Historic preservation is a tool that can develop community pride, revitalize neighborhoods and downtowns, spur economic development, promote tourism, and educate community residents about their shared heritage. Historic preservation leads to civic improvement and many communities, such as the City of Clearwater, utilize historic preservation to protect important existing historic properties and chart a path for maintaining them.

The Mission of the St. Petersburg Museum of History is to collect, preserve and communicate the history and heritage of Florida with emphasis on St. Petersburg and the Pinellas Peninsula.
Pinellas County’s oldest museum was founded in 1921 as the St. Petersburg Memorial Historical Society. Through the determination and effort of Mary Wheeler Eaton and others, the Society began collecting artifacts, natural history specimens, archival documents, photographs, papers, and “boxes of unknown treasures that were just dropped on our doorstep during the night.”In 1922, the Society became incorporated and the city of St. Petersburg provided the use of an old aquarium building (located on the same site as today’s Museum) for the public display of the Museum’s collections.

City of St. Augustine, Planning and Building Department, Historic Preservation Master Plan
The City of St. Augustine has a long history of preservation planning which was formalized in 1971 with five (5) Historic Preservation Zoning Districts with applicable architectural guidelines for redevelopment projects, and in 1974 the creation of the Historic Architectural Review Board (HARB) to protect the architectural character and integrity of the historic preservation districts. In addition to the Historic Preservation Zoning Districts, there are 7 National Register Historic Districts, 33 Individually listed buildings and sites on the National Register, and 5 buildings that have National Historic landmark designation along with the Town Plan National Historic Landmark District which refers to the entire fortified Colonial city from Orange Street to San Salvador, and Cordova Street to Avenida Menendez.
Last year, the City began the process to formally develop a Historic Preservation Plan for St. Augustine that would synthesize previous planning efforts reflecting current preservation values, as well as goals and recommendations for the future. With the help of the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions (NAPC) the planning process started off with an expert speaker to introduce the concept of the Historic Preservation Master Plan and was followed by a survey to gather initial public input. In January 2016, the consulting firm of Preservation Design Partnership, LLC, based out of Philadelphia, PA, was selected to head the effort to develop the St. Augustine Historic Preservation Master Plan which is anticipated to be completed later this year.
