alabama trust for historic preservation
The rich and diverse history of the great state of Alabama continues to be reflected through thousands of historic buildings and places in literally every corner of the state. These places have the unique ability to remind present and future generations in a tangible and meaningful way about the events that shaped our collective experience. They inspire us with the stories of those who built their communities, fought for their beliefs, and overcame all manner of personal challenge.
But there is also a great practical side to preserving the historic places that matter to us - the dollars and cents of revitalizing communities and returning to sustainable development patterns. Our historic places are essential assets for downtown and neighborhood revitalization and for the state’s growing heritage tourism industry. And in a world where environmental sustainability is becoming ever more critical, they represent one of the greenest approaches to providing places in which to live and work. It is why we call historic preservation the original green.

The Clarke County Historical Museum opened in 1986 as a project of the Clarke County Historical Society. It is located at downtown Grove Hill, AL in the Alston-Cobb House which was built in 1854. The museum contains a treasure of southwest Alabama history. One of the most popular exhibits is the fossils of the Basilosaurus Cetoides, a prehistoric whale that swam in the ocean waters that once covered the county. The museum also features exhibits that illustrate the lives of Native Americans who once lived in the area and of early pioneers of southwest Alabama. The museum grounds also features the ca. 1834 Creagh Law Office, the Turner corn crib, and the restored 1830’s Mathews Cabin.

Tuskegee History Center
Welcome to the Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Muticultural Center (TMC). We showcase the historic past concerning Tuskegee, Macon County, and much of Alabama's rich history. We represent "One historic place…three historic cultures… and the many tragedies and triumphs of the American South." The Tuskegee Human & Civil Rights Multicultural Center documents, in chronological order, the events which concern the formation of Macon County and the city of Tuskegee.
It is the goal of the museum to recognize the contributions of Native Americans, European Americans, and African Americans to the Alabamian landscape. It is also the distinguished goal of the Tuskegee Human & Civil Rights Multicultural Center to showcase how such a small town (Tuskegee, AL) has played a major role in transforming Southern American politics and history. The story begins with the founding of, what is now, Macon County and its "well developed" Indian nations and continues up until the present day. Throughout the center are the vividly illustrious stories that attempt to recapture crucial moments in American Tribal, Healthcare, Civil Rights, and Education.

The Huntsville-Madison County Historical Society was formed more than 60 years ago by thoughtful citizens who were concerned about preserving the unique heritage of this area. The richness and diversity of 200 years of local history indeed should be shared and celebrated.
Madison County, established in 1808, is older than the State. The small village of Huntsville, founded not far from the Tennessee River, has enjoyed a history that is worth being saved and shared for future generations.....

The Dover-Kohl Plan, officially adopted by Montgomery as a guide for future development, specifically calls for the preservation of this landmark. In the past decade, the city’s support for re-using downtown historic buildings has been an effective economic development strategy. The snowball effect of private and public investment in historic buildings is bringing in new dollars, new tax revenue, new residents, new jobs, new visitors and new recreational and entertainment opportunities to downtown. This healthier economy and our walkable downtown neighborhood are enhancing the well-being of all our citizens.

Historic Preservation commission
The City of Decatur Historic Preservation Commission was established by City Ordinance Number 90-2882A Article II on February 5, 1990. The creation of locally designated historic districts subject to historic overlay zoning was mandated by residents of the Old Decatur and New Decatur/Albany Historic Districts to help maintain the integrity of these two National Register districts. The Historic Preservation Commission is a municipally-appointed board who by law reviews all building and demolition permits within the designated districts for appropriateness.
