Image: James and Dolly Madison's Federal style plantation, Montpelier. Photograph, third quarter of the 19th century, some time after the house had been sold. By the mid-1800's, the portico columns were considered short for their spacing and the breadth of the portico itself. To improve the proportions, the portico deck was cut back, and the columns were extended to the ground, This photograph recorded the appearance of the house after the columns were altered. The unusual original proportions have been reinstated in the recent restoration,
